US gets tougher on TikTok
The Chinese mobile app TikTok has recorded more than two billion downloads on smartphones and tablets. It is popular mainly because of the multitude of short videos that users can quickly and easily publish, add effects and various digital filters.
American politicians have not been overly enthusiastic about the TikTok social network for quite some time. They are convinced that TikTok illegally collects the personal data of American users. That's why the US Senate voted against the use of the application on government devices some time ago. So this is the reason why US officials have not been allowed to have TikTok installed on their work phones or tablets for quite some time now.
But the United States of America was not satisfied with this yet. Namely, a new legislative proposal is being prepared, which could make it much more difficult for ByteDance to operate on American soil. If the new legislation is passed, ByteDance will have to sell TikTok's US branch over a period of time.
If ByteDance failed to sell the American branch in time, a ban on American soil would follow. The popular social network would no longer be accessible to the 170 million Americans who actively use TikTok today. The punishment should also befall the platforms that will not remove the controversial application from their set. More about the TikTok ban should be known soon.
