Would you pay $400 for a League of Legends costume?

In all likelihood not, and the very fact that we're talking about it is a bit absurd. Even more absurd is that such prices are becoming more and more common.
Would you pay $400 for a League of Legends costume?

League of Legends (LoL) players recently received a message when logging into the game about the arrival of a new pack. Nothing like that, it happens quite often. But when they saw the contents of the package and its price, they were speechless.

Developer Riot has unveiled a special set to pay tribute to a famous pro player of the game named Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok, who was recently inducted into the Hall of Fame. They are set to collaborate with Faker on costume and item designs to celebrate his legacy in the best possible way. There are three different kits available, with the most expensive kit costing over $400.

Each package is more expensive than the previous one. For the Risen Legend set, you will have to spend 5430 RP (a valuable in-game currency; Riot points) in-game, or 40 US dollars. The set includes a Hall of Legends pass, some special icons, smileys and a special costume for the Ahri character.

The Immortalized Legend Collection is even more expensive at around $250 (RP 32430) and contains all the items from the previous set plus some extra costumes and animated endings. The latest set is available to players for $450 and includes both of the previous sets, special animations that pay tribute to Faker, some other digital items (borders, portraits...), 100 levels for the "battle pass" subscription, and more.

Loyal players have already taken to Reddit and mocked the developer that "it's crazy that Faker, who is known for his generosity and for years of taking less pay to stay in Korea, would be associated with these crazy packages.” For this money, some rightly expected at least a physical statue of the character Ahri, some kind of collector's item, and not just a digital toy.

Riot even answered the question of how they decided on these prices in the FAQ.

“Whether you're a new fan, a longtime follower, or want to join in the celebration, we thought there should be something for you – and everyone – as we celebrate our first induction into the Hall of Legends.

For more casual fans, we have some of our most generous packages to date. The Hall of Legends Pass includes more costumes, smileys and more, while the Risen Legend Collection for collectors to enjoy adds a new Risen Legend Ahri costume. And for those die-hard fans, we have the ultimate package, including a costume with a transformation function. Although these versions are more expensive, they are intended for commemorative occasions and contain features that have never been used before.”

They also announced that they will be adding more players to their Hall of Fame in the future, which means more similar kits. To those who don't spend money on digital items, the whole situation is laughable. However, everyone is aware that these sets target a smaller group of spenders while keeping the game still active.

League of Legends isn't the only game with such skyrocketing prices for digital items. Even Apex Legends, for example, regularly introduces special events when it presents new special costumes and animations for several hundreds. The mobile game Galaxy of Heroes requires an investment of at least US$300 if you want to unlock a new character on the first day.
