Volkswagen with an e-car for around 20,000 euros

Volkswagen will reveal a new concept next month, announcing an electric car for around 20,000 euros that will replace the up model.

The new entry-level model, which will be unveiled early next month, is expected to go into production in 2027 and its base price will be “around 20,000 euros,” Volkswagen said. This will certainly please those who have been waiting for a cheap and accessible electric car for a long time.

The new successor to the up, known as the ID 1, is expected to share its basic platform with the ID 2, but technical details have not yet been confirmed. The first preview image shows the car to be quite rounded and not afraid of more chunky dimensions. The distinctive new look will include Volkswagen's new LED light signatures.

Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer called the presentation of the new car a key moment for the company. “Affordable, high-quality and profitable electric Volkswagen from Europe for Europe – that’s the Champions League of automotive technology!”

It has not yet been confirmed whether Volkswagen will build the ID 1 in Spain alongside the ID 2 and its sibling, the "ID 2 X" crossover, the compact EPIQ SUV and the sportier CUPRA Raval.

Volkswagen's Head of Technical Development Kai Grünitz said before the announcement that the new entry-level model will be a clear successor to the popular up car in terms of design. It will share some design elements and features with it.

“The ID 1 will be close to the up in terms of how the car is used,” he said. “When it comes to the look of the car, there aren’t many options for designing a small city car. It will be a car that matches the Volkswagen brand DNA, but at a lower price.”

Grünitz did not confirm the return of the up brand, which was discontinued in 2023, but Volkswagen has shown that it respects its famous names. The Golf, Passat, Tiguan, for example, have survived into the era of electric cars, so there is a possibility that the up will return.

Grünitz stressed how important it is for such a car to appear on the market. "You need a smaller car that is affordable for a wider range of customers. That's why the ID 2all will be available for around 25,000 euros, and we have invested in the development phase for a vehicle under 20,000 euros. That's Volkswagen."
