Nvidia has problems with new graphics cards
Nvidia has confirmed that it has shipped some RTX 5090, RTX 5090D, and even RTX 5070 Ti graphics cards with missing rendering units. It is promising free replacements to customers with the aforementioned cards.
“We have identified a rare issue affecting less than 0.5 % GeForce RTX 5090/5090D and 5070 Ti graphics cards that have one fewer ROP than specified. The average impact on graphics performance is 4 %, with no impact on AI and compute workloads. Affected consumers can contact their board manufacturer for a replacement. The manufacturing anomaly has been resolved,” PR director Ben Berraondo told The Verge.
The response to the issue has been positive. The problem was discovered early, so not many cards have been affected yet, even though the release of new graphics cards has been very limited in number. Only a few customers have managed to get their hands on the new cards, especially at the retail price. Those who were unlucky enough to get a “defective” graphics card report that the impact on performance is indeed minimal, but the aftertaste is still bitter. Even so, users of the new cards have had to deal with driver problems at launch and more serious problems with some power connectors melting.
If you own a new card, you can check if you got a defective model with GPU-Z. The number 176 should be noted under the ROP section.
