The Threads platform has finally convinced users
The Threads platform continues to gain popularity among users and shows the potential to compete with Twitter and Xu in the future.
Launched last summer based on Instagram technology, Meta's latest social networking app has been steadily increasing its daily active users since November, according to Apptopia. Threads is a direct competitor to X, which has struggled to maintain its user base since Elon Musk took over the platform just under two years ago.
Threads now has more US daily users than X. The pattern has been showing since last December, when Threads briefly became the most downloaded app in Apple's ecosystem.
"Threads surpassed X in US daily active users in December 2023 and hasn't looked back," said Thomas Grant, vice president of research at Apptopia. It is currently the third most downloaded free app in Apple's App Store, while X is ranked 41st. In the Google Play Store, Threads is ranked 12th among free apps, and X is ranked 44th.
In April, Threads averaged approximately 28 million daily active users, and in December 2023, Threads averaged 18 million users per day. X averaged 22 million daily users in April, down 21 percent from Threads' average.
Still, the app still has a lot of work to do before it supplants X as the most popular "blogging" app and reaches one billion users, which is CEO Meta's main goal. They recently launched a promotion with the singer Taylor Swift, but at least so far, analytics show that this has not helped to increase active users much.
