Apple introduced the new iPhone 15: USB-C, new processor, dynamic island and more

The speculation and confusion online can finally come to an end. At yesterday's Wonderlust event, Apple introduced the new iPhone 15 series, the new Apple Watch and AirPods.

What's new? We can immediately say that all iPhone 15 models have received USB-C connector, which the new European legislation forced them to do. iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will use the older generation of USB 2.0, but the Pro versions will still get the third generation of the USB-C standard.

Wireless MagSafe charging remains at 15W, while wired charging via the new USB-C port is limited to just 20W. For comparison, Android phones can reach up to 240W, with the average hovering around 60W.

iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus: design changes

The big change this year is the inclusion of Dynamic Island on all models. The software notch was limited to Pro versions last year, but this year Apple is clearly in a festive mood. The number of applications that support dynamic island is still limited. Now that the island is available on all four phones, that might be enough motivation for developers to take advantage of Apple's feature.

Although the design hasn't changed too much, there are some subtle changes. The sides are still flat, but the edges are slightly curved, which should make the device easier to hold and use. Design is a very subjective area. Some people love flatness, while others can't live without some curvier curves.

The biggest difference between the iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Plus is the screen size. The classic iPhone 15 belongs more to the class of compact phones (such as Asus Zenfone phones), while the iPhone 15 Plus belongs to the class of giants (6.7 inches). Apple was very thoughtful here. They made two very similar phones and simultaneously captured the attention of two major groups of users.

The phones will be available in pink, yellow, green, blue and black.

iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max: titanium and action button

The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max naturally got even more premium materials and a sense of elegance. The case is made of titanium and first impressions are very impressive. Of course, we'll have to wait and see how the two phones fit in our hands.

By choosing titanium as the core material, the new iPhone 15 Pro phones are lighter than steel handsets. They will be available in black, gold, blue and raw titanium. As I said at the beginning, the Pro versions will again stand out with premium materials, colors and feel.

Another important change is the action button (Action Button), which will serve as a button for activating shortcuts, for example, for taking pictures, starting the stopwatch, and the like.

All iPhone 15 phones have an IP68 water resistance rating.

iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus: A16 Bionic and other hardware

The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus are powered by the A16 Bionic, which debuted in the Pro series last year. The A16 Bionic provides a decent improvement over the A15, but the bigger difference is in the performance boost. Both models also have satellite connectivity and an SOS function.

A new feature that debuted across the entire iPhone 15 portfolio this year is Roadside Assistance via satellite. The feature is similar to SOS and uses the same satellite technology to provide assistance when your car breaks down on the side of the road. Initially, the feature will only be available in the US, but it is expected to expand to other regions at the beginning of the year.

iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max: New A17 Pro processor

As expected, the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max got the new A17 Pro chip, built on a completely new 3nm architecture, an achievement that puts Apple ahead of the biggest names in the processor market (Qualcomm, MediaTek)

The 16-core neural drive is 2x faster and this time a dedicated AV1 decoder is also available. The A17 Pro chip has 19 billion transistors and includes six cores, with a 10% increase in performance compared to the A16 Bionic.

The graphics core is also undergoing major changes this year with a new 6-core chip built on a new architecture that provides a 20 percent boost. But what stands out the most is that the graphics cores now use machine-accelerated ray tracing, similar to computer graphics cards, but of course not at the same level. Also, the number of mobile games that support this technology is currently very limited.

Android phone fans can rest easy. Ray tracing technology is also available in the latest Snapdragon processors.

iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus: improved photo quality

Standard iPhone models have received a major camera upgrade and now come with a 48MP main camera by default. There's also a 12MP wide-angle lens, which is largely unchanged from last year, but the move to a 48MP lens should lead to significant improvements in photos and videos.

iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max: new cameras

The iPhone 15 Pro doesn't stray too far from its predecessor's (objectively excellent) three-sensor photography system. The phone has: 48MP wide-angle (24mm, f/1.78), 12MP ultra-wide (13mm, f/2.2) and 12MP telephoto (77mm f/2.8) with 3x zoom.

The key upgrade here is the addition of longer focal lengths. According to Apple, it's like having "seven professional lenses in your pocket." The resolution of the main camera has remained the same, but the sensor has been updated anyway. It now lets you capture super high resolution photos with consistently more detail and color.

Portrait mode has also been revamped on the iPhone 15 Pro. Manually switching to Portrait mode is no longer necessary. If your subject is a person or an animal, the phone automatically captures depth information, so you can choose to view your photo immediately as a portrait (with a blur effect) or later in Gallery.

As with the iPhone 15 Pro, the iPhone 15 Pro Max has received upgrades across its entire camera system. The 48MP main camera now takes 24MP photos by default instead of 12MP shots, and improvements to the Photonic Engine mean better low-light photography (this also applies to the ultra-wide camera).

But the biggest camera upgrade exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro Max comes in the form of a new 12MP telephoto camera that features a periscope lens arrangement for 5x optical zoom and a 120mm focal length.

Apple says this camera should provide better close-up shots and also perform well in wildlife and sports event photography. Improvements in Smart HDR processing promise more authentic skin tones and colours, while a LiDAR scanner combined with the main and ultra-wide-angle cameras can capture 'spatial' footage for use with Apple's Vision Pro mixed reality headset. Of course, if you also have a deep enough wallet for just under 4 thousand euros.
