How durable is the foldable OnePlus Open?
Two factors are slowing the mass adoption of foldable phones: price and durability. There are already some foldable phones for less than €1000 (unfortunately, they don't appear often in Slovenia). Durability, however, is still often a bone of contention. There is no doubt that they can easily withstand daily use for a year or even two years. How about three or more years? Still, these are premium phones that we expect to last a long time. Recently, OnePlus also launched its representative on the market, which, at least in terms of specifications, conquered the competition.
The external screen of the new OnePlus Open has a diagonal of 6.31 inches, and the internal screen opens to a size of 7.82 inches, completely standard dimensions for this type of phone. Both screens are refreshed at 120 Hz with LTPO 3.0 technology, which means that the refresh rate can automatically adjust between 1 Hz and 120 Hz. They chose the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for the processor, which we have talked about so far. What you need to know is that the performance is simply too much for almost any user. Surprisingly, they also installed a set of cameras, which is the best among foldable phones. It feels like OnePlus has made no compromises, even though they sound very clichéd.
As expected, the durability of the new phone was tested by JerryRigEverything. Like most modern smartphones, the OnePlus Open passed the scratch, burn and intrusion tests without a problem. The 6.31-inch external cover display with proprietary Ceramic Guard protection had no major problems with impact from Mohs level 7 points, while the ultra-thin glass inner screen was easily damaged by level 3 scratches. This is not too surprising, since the flexible screen is actually closer to tempered plastic than glass. Other foldable screens on the market fared very similarly.
Fortunately, the back and camera assembly are more resistant to scratches. The collapsible hinge is said to withstand over a million bending cycles, something not even JerryRigEverything can verify. The IPX4 rating also did its job well. During the test, dust and dirt were not retained in the hinge mechanism.
As a final test, the phone had to pass the bending test in the opposite direction. The Google Pixel Fold and the Motorola Razr+ are both covered here. The OnePlus Open passed the test with flying colors. The phone returned to its original state after bending, the only difference was that it no longer closed like before. The combination of titanium alloy and carbon fiber certainly contributed to its excellent durability.
