Here are the 8 biggest news from the iPhone 16 event
Apple's “It's Glowtime” event is behind us. It's true that the main star of the event was once again the iPhone, but Apple also presented several other interesting innovations, including updates to its line of smartwatches and AirPods.
Let's take a look at the 8 biggest innovations brought by the iPhone 16 event.
The iPhone 16 got two new buttons
In addition to the already familiar "Action Button" button from the previous series of devices, the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus have a new additional button, something similar to a DSLR, with which we can record videos, take photos, or adjust settings. Both models have rear cameras placed one under or over the other, and both support videos that can be viewed with Apple Vision Pro.
The iPhone 16 is equipped with a faster A18 processor, which is said to process new UI functionalities coming to the device, but not (for now) to Europe. The starting price of the 15.49-centimeter model is $799 (calculated 725 euros), while the price of the 17-centimeter model is of course higher and amounts to $899 (calculated 816 euros). Available colors are white, black, green, pink and blue. Sales of the new model will begin on September 20.
The iPhone 16 Pro has bigger screens and better cameras
The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max have slightly larger screens, with the base Pro model having a 6.3-inch/16cm screen (instead of 6.1-inch/15.49cm), while the Pro Max has a 6.9-inch/ 17.53-cm screen (instead of 6.7-inch/17-cm). Like the base iPhone 16, the Pro line has a new capture button. They also feature an upgraded A18 Pro chip, with the Pro Max version having "the best battery life of any iPhone to date," according to Apple.
Unlike last year's model, both phones - not just the Pro Max - get the same 5x telephoto camera with a "tetraprism" design, along with an upgraded 48MP ultra-wide sensor and a 48MP "Fusion Camera". The Pro phones are available in gold, black, white and "natural" titanium (gray). The basic iPhone 16 Pro costs $999 (906 euros), while the Pro Max costs $1,199 (1,087 euros). They will be available for pre-order on Friday and will be in stores on September 20th.
iPhone 16 gets “Visual Intelligence”
All iPhone 16 models are ready for “Apple Intelligence” – new artificial intelligence features that Apple will launch in beta next month, starting in English. These features include the ability to search for images in your library by describing them and creating custom emojis.
Apple has also updated the camera control button with a new feature called “Visual Intelligence”, which automatically searches for the things you are photographing. You can also use it by, for example, taking a picture of a concert poster and simply saving it to your calendar.
The Watch Series 10 smartwatch comes with a larger screen and a thinner profile
The Apple Watch Series 10 has the slimmest profile ever, along with a larger wide-angle OLED display that Apple says is up to 40 percent brighter when viewed at an angle. By measuring breathing disorders during sleep, the watch is able to detect signs of sleep apnea. It also has a built-in depth and water temperature sensor.
The new device is available in polished aluminum black, with matte options for rose gold and silver, or in the classic polished titanium combination. According to Apple, the Watch Series 10 is 20 percent lighter than the Series 9. The price of the Watch Series 10 starts at $399 (calculated 362 euros) and will be available on September 20.
Apple Watch Ultra from now on in a new satin black color
The Watch Ultra hasn't received any major updates, but Apple has announced a sleek satin black finish and a titanium "Milanese Loop" band that Apple says is "made of corrosion-resistant titanium and designed for diving."
The new generation of AirPods offers better sound quality and ANC technology
Apple has finally introduced the AirPods 4, which are equipped with a new H4 chip that allows for better sound quality. Apple says that the new AirPods with an "open-ear" design are "the most comfortable AirPods model ever." They also have useful features such as sound isolation and transparency mode.
AirPods 4 have a smaller USB-C compatible charging case with a speaker that lets you emit a sound when you try to locate them with the Find My app. Apple is also adding active noise cancellation to the next, more expensive generation of headphones. The cheaper AirPods model costs from 129 dollars (calculated 117 euros) of the devices, and the version with ANC costs 179 dollars (calculated 162 euros). Both go on sale on September 20.
The AirPods Pro 2 headphone model will soon work as a hearing aid
Later this year, Apple will start selling AirPods Pro 2 as an over-the-counter hearing aid. Apple is preparing some hearing-focused features, and for the AirPods Pro 2, it is preparing a hearing protection feature and a clinical hearing test.
AirPods Max also have USB-C charging
Apple has also come up with a small update to its AirPods Max headphones. The device comes in a few new colors and Lightning charging has been replaced by USB-C.
