Attractive color e-book reader

A few months after launching a 10.3-inch tablet with a color screen and stylus support, Onyx has introduced a smaller and cheaper model with a 7.8-inch screen. Similar to the Onyx BOOX Tab Ultra C, the new Onyx BOOX Tab Mini C has an E-Ink Kaleido 3 display that supports 4096 colors, a pressure pen for writing or drawing on the screen, a Qualcomm octa-core processor and 4 GB of LPDDR4X memory.

However, the smaller screen makes the new model slightly more portable. In addition, it is also slightly more affordable, since the price for it is 450 dollars. The larger model retails for $600. In addition to a larger screen with a higher resolution (which is slightly closer to the size of an A4 sheet), this model has more built-in memory and a 16 MP rear camera.

In other respects, the two e-readers are very similar. Both can display 300 pixels per inch of black and white content or 150 pixels per inch of color content. Both use E-Ink Kaleido 3 display technology, which adds a color filter to the grayscale screen and allows for some color gradation, but colors can appear a little pale compared to typical LCD or OLED displays. Since E-Ink displays typically have a slow refresh rate, the devices are designed for reading static content rather than watching videos or playing games with lots of movement.

Other features include front lighting with adjustable color temperature, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless support, stereo speakers, built-in microphone, 5000 mAh battery, G-sensor for automatic screen rotation, and USB-C OTG port for power and/or data transfer.

Onyx BOOX Tab Mini C runs on Android 11 operating system adapted for E-Ink displays. It offers support for documents in a wide range of formats, e-books, images and audio files. Neither model has a headphone jack, but both have built-in speakers for listening to audio, and can also be used with wireless headphones or Bluetooth speakers. Of course, you can use a USB-C adapter to connect to wired headphones.
