Calcium can be an alternative to lithium in batteries

Calcium can be an alternative to lithium in batteries

Calcium-based metal-free batteries are unique and completely different from those that use cobalt in their lithium-ion form. The research team's focus on this type of battery stems from a desire to have greater control over the domestic supply chain, as cobalt and lithium are typically sourced in other countries. In addition, safer battery chemistry could prevent potential fires.

An important step forward in the field of calcium batteries was recently made by Chinese researchers, who used calcium peroxide in their production, which is said to be excellent for storing electricity. In addition, it is also found in everyday products such as chewing gum, toothpaste and even erasers.

Chinese experts managed to complete 700 charging cycles with a calcium peroxide-based battery. This is an encouraging number and an indication that in the future, with additional improvements, these types of batteries could be used in mobile devices. To achieve an already decent number of charging cycles, experts used a special electrolyte and carbon fibers. It is also worth noting that calcium batteries can also store more electricity compared to lithium batteries.

Calcium batteries are currently still in the early stages of development. The researchers' biggest problem is the poor charging efficiency of the batteries. Nevertheless, the success of Chinese experts gives hope that in the future we will use batteries that will be significantly cheaper compared to lithium ones. In addition, they will also be safer to use and will be able to store more energy.
