AirPods with IR cameras?
Apple is rumored to be planning to add a new model to the AirPods series, namely AirPods with built-in infrared cameras that can be paired with Vision Pro VR/AR/XR glasses to create a surround sound experience that changes based on movement heads.
The information was revealed by Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has been right in his predictions several times in the past. However, AirPods with IR cameras won't be available anytime soon, as mass production isn't expected to start until 2026.
Bloomberg also reported that Apple is flirting with such headphones. These are now two reliable sources, but of course Apple may decide to scrap the idea.
The camera system in the AirPods will be similar to the technology used for Face ID in the iPhone, according to Kuo. With them, it will be possible to detect when someone turns their head, so that certain sounds can be amplified or reduced accordingly. If you are in a virtual 3D environment, such a soundscape can be very effective.
Another thing the cameras could detect are hand gestures, Kuo says. Gestures can already be used for actions on the Vision Pro device, but no user would object if the use of gestures could be improved.
The new headset could be unveiled at the same event as a cheaper version of the Vision Pro glasses, which are also rumored to be ready by 2026.
