Google is testing a search engine powered only by artificial intelligence

Google and parent company Alphabet have begun testing an experimental version of their search engine that completely eliminates the classic 10 blue links that appear on the first page of Google results. Instead, it displays only a summary generated by artificial intelligence (AI).

The new feature, available to Google One AI Premium subscribers, can be accessed on the results page for any search query by clicking on the tab labeled "AI Mode" next to existing options like Images and Maps.

“Power users told us they want AI answers for even more of their searches,” Robby Stein, VP of Product, said in a blog post.

Google One AI Premium is a $19.99 per month subscription that provides additional cloud storage and special access to some artificial intelligence features.

Google currently shows users in more than 100 countries AI Overviews, summaries that increasingly appear at the top of traditional hyperlinks to relevant web pages. In May of last year, it began adding ads to these overviews or summaries.

In AI Mode, users are presented with a more comprehensive UI summary with hyperlinks to cited web pages. The ten blue links system has been replaced by a search bar for asking additional questions.

Google said that AI Mode is powered by a customized version of the Gemini 2.0 model with reasoning capabilities that make it better equipped to handle complex queries.

Alphabet's $350 billion in revenue in 2024 was driven largely by search-related advertising. But it faces its biggest challenge to its core business in years from AI challengers led by OpenAI, which has added web search engine capabilities to its AI.
