Volkswagen introduces an e-car for 20,000 euros

Volkswagen has unveiled the affordable ID. EVERY1 electric car, which is expected to have a long-promised retail price of around €20,000. With this model, VW wants to revitalize its business and sales of electric cars.

As market leaders like Tesla continue to promise (but fail to deliver) the elusive affordable electric car, VW hopes to shake up the competition by unveiling plans for a full line of mass-market vehicles. The new car is also intended to fend off a wave of cheap Chinese cars entering Europe.

The ID. EVERY1 is positioned just below the ID. 2all, which will be launched in 2023 and is expected to cost around €25,000. The latter is scheduled to go into production in 2026, with the ID. EVERY1 due a year later. Whether the names will change by then is not yet known.

The ID. EVERY1 is a small hatchback with new software and some classic design tricks, such as the modular center console, which will also be present in the ID. 2all. Both models are part of a new “family of electric city cars” based on front-wheel drive versions of VW’s modular electric platform. These new electric cars are being developed under the umbrella of the Core brand group within the Volkswagen Group, the company said. The automaker expects to launch a total of nine new models by 2027.

Of course, you can't expect much in the way of performance or range for that price. VW says the ID. EVERY1 concept has a top speed of 130 km/h and is powered by an all-new electric motor with 94 horsepower (70 kW). VW hasn't revealed the size of the battery, but based on the estimated range (250 km), we can assume it's somewhere around 35 kWh.
