AMD and Intel have teamed up against a powerful rival

The pressure is mounting. The entry of Qualcomm and the Arm architecture into the computer field, which until now was dominated by the x86 architecture, was a good enough reason for Intel and AMD (and others) to temporarily forget their rivalry and come together against a common enemy.

AMD and Intel are the main members of the new x86 Advisory Group (x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group), which will try to protect their interests against Arm, which proved this year that it is ripe for a fight with the biggest giants of this industry.

Many other members are included in the alliance, such as Microsoft, Google, Meta and Lenovo. AMD CEO Lisa Su and Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger spoke at the conference this morning, saying the x86 architecture is "alive and well."

In a press release, they stated that the goal of the new advisory group is to "increase the compatibility, predictability, and consistency of the x86 product offering." The group is seeking feedback from hardware and software developers so they can formulate streamlined guidelines for product line standardization.

It is interesting to watch two competing companies on the same stage with the same goal. Behind the nice words, it is clear to everyone that this was an address to investors, who wanted to reassure them and assure them that AMD and Intel are ready for new competition.

Qualcomm isn't resting either. For next year, they promised to put the new chips in cheaper laptops for less than €1000, without sacrificing the performance of the NPU chips. It won't necessarily just be about laptops, they also mentioned mini computers.
