Microsoft could revive its mixed reality division

They were supposed to be helped by Samsung, with whom they concluded an agreement to supply OLED panels that could be used for a new family of mixed reality glasses. At least that's what the Korean newspaper The Elec reported, which also stated that the partnership is at a very early stage and that mass production will begin in 2026. The new glasses are said to be focused on games and video content, but there was no mention of the metaverse.

The alleged device sounds like a partial competition to Apple's Vision Pro glasses, which envisioned the VR/AR world more in the form of spatial computing rather than the classic virtual reality system that Meta, for example, is aiming for. As Apple itself has found out, this is a very complicated area, which can be seen in the sales numbers of their new glasses.

Microsoft has also tried to tame this volatile market in the past with HoloLens devices and Windows Mixed Reality virtual reality glasses, but last year it cut the number of employees in the HoloLens division and discontinued Windows Mixed Reality glasses.

In 2023, Samsung announced that it will produce a new VR system in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm, which is rumored to appear around the end of this year. Microsoft has been directing its applications to the Meta Quest VR glasses for several years. This is an interesting potential competition in the mixed reality space, provided all the rumors come true, which we really hope, as it is still a fairly unexplored market with a lot of potential, both in terms of gaming, work and entertainment.
