A plastic, kid-friendly Apple Watch SE could spice things up on the market

The color palette of the Apple Watch SE hasn't changed significantly for a long time, and maybe it's finally time for Apple to think in that direction.
A plastic, kid-friendly Apple Watch SE could spice things up on the market

It's pretty impressive to see how Apple sells us practically the same Apple Watch smartwatch year after year. At least as far as the design of the device is concerned, it changes minimally. It is true that Apple always offers some new technical feature, functionality and improvement and upgrade, but there are no major changes in the appearance itself. It's also a fact that nobody really needs a new smartwatch every year, but the question is whether we can still talk about annual refreshes of the device.

But there's something on the horizon that could shake things up in this area: a plastic edition of the Apple Watch SE. Bloomberg Correspondent Mark Gurman started this rumor last month, but it didn't get much attention from the tech media around the world. Last weekend, Power On wrote in its "e-newsletter" that Apple is using plastic to make its smartwatches more child-friendly. He also added that the device's plastic design could allow Apple to offer more different color combinations than before. The lack of color choices is one of the more common criticisms of Apple's smartwatches. It seems that this new product, a plastic model of the Apple Watch, could actually be the biggest and most exciting update to the Apple Watch in recent years.

Make no mistake, we are in no way saying that the Apple Watch looks bad, quite the opposite. However, the color palette of the watch remained the same for several years. Their red variant is by far the boldest if you want to stand out a little. Then there are shades of black, a silver model, something similar to pink bavi, and the choice is slowly running out.

Apple is much more bold and diverse when it comes to the colors of its other devices. Especially when you look at the iMac and some of the non-pro iPhones. We can only imagine what would happen if Apple decided to make its Watch SE more kid-friendly. We're sure this wouldn't mean a return to those aggressive oranges, greens, and yellows from the 90s (although it would be interesting to see what such watches would look like), but something similar to the purples and banana yellows from previous iPhone cycles would be a nice refresh for the device series.

The only downside to all of this is that we're talking about the SE model here. There's no doubt that it's a great smartwatch in many ways, but there are some things that we might miss once we get used to the main "Series" edition of Apple watches. Many would probably be willing to give up some of the functionality if it meant more color options.
