Sony has announced the beginning of the end of optical discs

As access to the World Wide Web is becoming faster and more reliable, rarely anyone reaches for optical discs to store programs, documents and multimedia content. For this reason, it comes as no surprise that Sony is discontinuing the production of optical discs altogether. The decision applies to all compact discs CD, DVD and Blu-Ray, which are intended for recording in optical readers.

It is worth noting that Sony will still be manufacturing optical discs for retailers through its factories. This means that it will still make optical discs to store music, videos and games. But the production of this type of optical media will also gradually end. The speed will, of course, depend on the demand for optical discs from end customers and companies.

Since Sony is one of the largest producers of CD, DVD and Blu-Ray optical discs, their worldwide availability will surely decrease significantly. As a result, this will be followed by an increase in retail prices for such drives. Nevertheless, we believe that many of us will not miss optical discs. These are slow, unreliable and not intended for long-term data storage.
