The best-selling car in the world in 2023 is the Tesla Model Y
This is the first year that an electric car has topped the list. An even bigger surprise is that the Model Y is not even the latest model and yet it has won over 1,200,000 new owners. Model Y came out of production four years ago and quickly found its feet (or tires) in many markets. Whether he will keep his place in 2024 remains to be seen. Competition is intensifying, China, for example, has been preparing to enter markets outside its domestic market for a long time.
What about the other places in the ranking? According to Car Industry Analysis, in second place is the Toyota RAV4, which has as many as 1,075,200 owners behind its wheel, about 6 %s more than the year before. This is very good news for Toyota, which saw a 10-% drop between 2021 and 2022. Perhaps this is a sign that, at least for them, the trend has reversed.
The third place belongs to another Japanese company, the Honda CR-V (846,100 cars sold). The rise to third place (in 2022 it was in 4th place) is due to much better success in the American market, where sales have been declining in previous years. It is also helped by the fact that it is sold in practically every market, from America, Europe to Asia and Australia.
Japan also took fourth place. Toyota Corolla is already available in its 12th version, more than 50 million units have been sold in total. In 2023, however, they recorded a figure of 803,000, which is surprisingly 19 % less than in 2022, which is why it also dropped from second to fourth place.
The last place in the top five belongs to another Toyota. The Toyota Corolla Cross (715,500) saw a 35 % sales increase in the year, again thanks to its availability in almost all markets.
Where are the electric cars? In 10th place is Tesla Model 3 (508,500), China's BYD Qin is in 12th place (473,300), which is a special success story, as the manufacturer managed to increase sales by 43 % in 12 months.
What is the situation in Slovenia? In 2023, 5.85 % more cars were sold, Volkswagen is in first place, Skoda is in second place, and Renault is in third place. Toyota, which dominates the world ranking, is in fourth place in Slovenia. Tesla is in 14th place (it was in 23rd place), and at the very bottom of the list is Jeep.
