5 Free AI and ChatGPT Apps for Instant Travel Planning

These free travel planning apps use artificial intelligence and machine learning tools like ChatGPT to create a travel plan for you in seconds.
5 Free AI and ChatGPT Apps for Instant Travel Planning

You can tell the travel agency your dates, the place you want to visit and your budget and expect a complete itinerary of what to do there based on your preferences. Can artificial intelligence do the same (quality) work? The free travel planning apps below use the very technology of artificial intelligence and tools like ChatGPT to prepare your itinerary in seconds.

1. Roam Around (web app): An artificial intelligence tool powered by ChatGPT that we use to plan city explorations

Naturally, the first AI that comes to mind these days is ChatGPT. Roam Around uses the popular new internet chat app with artificial intelligence to help you plan your trip in any city, which is another of the amazing things you can do with ChatGPT. We're not talking about a super sophisticated app by any means, but it's still easier than learning how to set the right "prompt" in ChatGPT to get what you want.

Roam Around only asks you two things: the city you plan to visit and how many days you will spend there. Based on this information, ChatGPT performs a query and presents the answer in a very understandable way.

The Roam Around app is pretty basic and doesn't allow you to refine or filter your results in any way. We recommend treating it more as a reference or template to start planning your trip, which you can then check with other guides to refine your plan. Also, this is a good app for users who are unable to access ChatGPT for one reason or another.

2. Vacay Chatbot (web app): Learn how to write effective ChatGPT travel “prompts”

Vacay specializes in advising travelers on selected vacations and experiences, based on destinations, operators or price ranges. Based on ChatGPT's popularity, they've also developed an AI-powered chatbot powered by ChatGPT to design a custom trip, give you inspiration on where to go, and even generate local recommendations for hotels, restaurants, and attractions.

At the time of writing this article, the application was not working as it should, but the writers of various blogs claim that it generally provides quality results. Unlike the Roam Around app, Vacay Chatbot has several different ways to use it. Of course, you will also benefit if you have at least a little practice on how to write an effective appeal. Vacay recognizes that not all users are adept at this and therefore offers several examples of effective travel-related prompts. It also provides a small guide and best practices to help you customize your ChatGPT queries.

3. Roamr (web app): Plan multi-city trips with maps and photos

Like other apps that help us make the best travel plan based on artificial intelligence, Roamr sees itself as a starting point for your plans or thinking. The basis is to give users three things that make it easier for them to plan their trip:

  • "day-by-day" plans with details
  • pictures of all locations and activities
  • embedded map view for each trip

Roamr first asks for your destination and yes, you can add multiple destinations if you plan to visit more than one city. Add a start and end date, then choose a trip style from options like Relaxing, Romantic, Historic, Outdoor, and Adventure. You can also select multiple options.

In seconds, Roamr provides you with an itinerary with a brief description of what to do. As you scroll through activities, the map automatically updates to show locations. You can also view Google Photos about each point of interest. Finally, Roamr adds a weather forecast for your travel dates and currency conversion.

4. iPlan.AI (Android, iOS): The simplest travel planning app

Although iPlan.AI doesn't mention which AI or machine learning algorithm it uses, the results are good enough that we don't even care. The app works great on phones as it gives you a complete itinerary for any city depending on how many days you have available.

iPlan.AI first asks you to select a destination city. From what we've tested, iPlan.AI works best for popular tourist destinations, but not so much for unusual or obscure trips. You then enter how many days you'll be there, plus your free time for each day - an interesting step to ensure a better itinerary if you already have some activities in mind. You can also trust iPlan.AI if you are traveling alone, as a couple, with family or friends, then choose your interest from topics such as history, art and culture, nature, entertainment, shopping, food, sports, relaxation, etc. . Finally, choose a budget between economy, regular or luxury.

In a few minutes, iPlan.AI provides you with a daily travel plan. It's plotted on a map so you can see all the locations, and each point of interest has additional details, such as how many minutes people typically spend there. You will also find information about the estimated travel time and modes of transport between these places. You can share it with a friend or export everything to Google Maps to help you while traveling.

The app is free and no ads were seen during testing. The only real limitation is that you can't get an itinerary for multi-city travel. For now, you will need to make a plan for each city you will visit one by one.

5. Curiosio (web applications): AI generated “road trips” anywhere in the world

The easiest last-minute travel plan is to get in the car and drive away. Curiosio specializes in helping you plan your itineraries for travel in several major countries on all continents. It doesn't cover all the places, but the existing collection is impressive enough.

Curiosio uses its own AI engine, Ingeenee, which is trained on multiple travel-based sources such as Wikivoyage, Wikipedia, Wikidata, Freebase, DBpedia, GeoNames, OSMNames, OpenStreetMap. With this data set, it can map out a route plan that suits your requirements based on various parameters.

You can set options for a roundtrip or one-way trip with a start and end point. If there are places you want to visit along the way, add them. Then set the number of travelers, travel dates, the vehicle you use, the total budget and whether you want to visit places of interest or are less well known. The AI usually gives you multiple plans and paths for these options.

The itinerary includes a map of your route along with a daily breakdown of where you'll go and what you'll see. You can click on each point of interest to find more information about it. There are easy shortcuts to copy the link so you can share it with fellow travelers, print it, or even export it to Google Maps. Curiosio is one of the best travel planners for your next adventure.

Limitations of AI travel planning apps

All of these apps urge you not to use the itinerary as is and only treat it as a template or guide to start planning your trip. There is a good reason behind this. While tools like ChatGPT are great, they currently have several limitations, such as databases not being recently updated or requiring special "prompts" from the user.

A real human travel agent will still understand you better and offer you a more customized itinerary to suit your requirements. Of course, this will cost you some money. If you want a free basic guide, AI travel planning apps are a good place to start.
